Slimserver

Slimserver is Open Source software and can be loaded on top of any popular operating systems like Linux, Windows or OS-X (Mac). It scans a music folder or library full of files containing music and streams that music to any connected client.

Slimserver can stream simultaneously to multiple clients. Several clients can be playing music in a synchronised way, also known as "music follow me" functionality.

A client can be either hardware, Squeezebox, or software, SoftSqueeze. Both hardware and software clients are equal in functionality. Other hardware like Sonos, a solution resembling Squeezebox, also depends on Slimserver.

Slimserver is fully controllable trough a web interface, to be more precise, on port 9000. Every aspect regarding the server, e.g. rescanning, streaming properties, etc. can be controlled by a standard browser.

Also, each client, both hardware and software, can be controlled with the same web interface: playlist, volume, display properties, visibility of menu options etc. This is the ultimate remote control: image a Squeezebox connected to your audio set, while you control what it plays with a laptop sitting in the back of the room or even outside when there's a wireless network in place!

SoftSqueeze

As part of the Slimserver, there's a small software package, SoftSqueeze. This nifty little Java application emulates Squeezebox completely (display, navigation, etc.) on a PC client. In can be installed through Java Web Start, so the only thing needed is a Java.

Softsqueeze is by nature zero-install and zero-configuration, just click and listen!

Softsqueeze will work equally good Windows as on Linux , or to be more precise, on all environments where a Java runtime is available.
