Squeezebox

Squeezebox [slimdevices.com] is a dedicated piece of hardware for streaming music directly to your audio equipment to listen music without compromise. It's a little device placed next to your audio setup, just like any other audio component (CD-player, tuner, etc.) and allows you to read music files stored on a central location. This is also his only task: Squeezebox doesn't have any built in amplifiers or, worse, speakers, so you are free to choose those audio components.

It depends on a server application, Slimserver. Slimserver is Open Source software and can be loaded on top of any popular operating systems like Linux, Windows or OS-X (Mac). It has also a built-in wireless receiver and a high quality digital/analog (D/A) converter.

Squeeze is able to play the lossless flac codec, so not a drop of audio information is spilled, delivering the maximum of music directly into your audio set.

What makes Squeezebox unique is the fact that you can make use of an external D/A converter to further enhance the quality of your audio chain. In fact, the level of quality solely depends on this. Choose whatever you like and how far your financial reserves let you and you can play well with the big boys in the high end arena...

Typical benefits of the Squeezebox are:

  • Stream your centrally stored music to your audio equipment
  • Plays multiple codecs like flac, mp3, ogg and many more
  • All your music available through one remote control; this includes browsing, searching and selecting playlists
  • Listen wireless
  • High quality digital/analog convert or (Burr-Brown), can be even enhanced further into high end by bypassing the internal convert or with an external one
  • Depends only on open protocols (wireless, streaming), so there's no vendor lockin or what so ever
  • Several Squeezeboxes can be combined and can play music in a synchronized way
  • Internet radio, news, and more!

Squeezebox can also be emulated by SoftSqueeze, giving exactly the same functionality as the hardware counterpart, but then a PC.
